Pet-owners at this year’s Pride London 2011 event will be able to enter their dogs into the capital’s first gay dog show.

Pride London has teamed up with fellow charity Battersea Dogs & Cats Home to compete in London’s Pride Pooch 2011, the winner of which will take centre stage on the animal charity’s float.

According to organisers, there are five categories:

  • Dandiest dog – the best-looking male dog
  • Prettiest bitch – the best-looking female dog
  • Super Staffie – the best-looking Staffordshire Bull Terrier/cross
  • Best rescue dog
  • Lookey-likely – a dog that looks most like its owner or a celebrity

Entrants have until midday, Sunday 26 June, to register their pooches on the Battersea website. The top five dogs in each category will be invited to the grand final at Fire, Vauxhall, on Thursday 30 June.

A £3 registration fee will be charged and all proceeds split between Pride London and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Richard Chadwick, home events officer at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, said: “We have successfully rehomed many dogs to the gay community, and this is the perfect way to celebrate all the fantastic owners and their pooches. As a London institution, Battersea is thrilled to be part of the capital’s first-ever gay dog show, and look forward to showcasing London’s Pride pooch on our float.”
