Icon7-year-old donates money to LGBT charity

Given money to donate by his parents, Malcolm decided to split it between the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

In order to teach him about the importance of helping the world around him, Malcolm’s parents gave him $140 to donate to a charity of his choice. In a note accompanying the donation, his mother explained, “After hearing a story on the radio about the mistreatment of gays and lesbians, Malcolm became both upset and curious about the issue…”

Malcolm included a note of his own along with $70 donated to the LA Gay and Lesbian Center. It said, “I am sending you this money because I don’t think it’s fair that Gay people are not treated equally.” His mother has now challenged the center to raise $27,000 in his name.

The CEO of the center, Lorrie L. Jean, explained that Malcolm’s act of charity gave her hope for the future, saying it offered, “A hope that when his generation reaches adulthood, all of the homophobia, discrimination, and abuse we in the LGBT community face today will no longer exist.”

The LA Gay and Lesbian Center offers health and HIV care services, along with an array of legal, social, cultural and educational services. It also offers transitional accommodation for homeless youths.
